1and1 Dedicated Server Review

1and1 starter

Dedicated Web Hosting

£35

I have, been with 1and1 for over a year now and have always found their service to be very good.
I started out with their Business-Pro shared account and once I can to the end of my 1 years free web hosting I decided that I may as well bite the bullet, pay the extra and upgrade to a dedicated machine.
I went for their discount managed linux server, upgraded online and was presented with a screen telling me that my server would be ready in 24 hours.
24 Hours later - no server coming up in my control panel, a quick phone call to their dedicated sever support line and they said that it can take up to 3 days, depending on server availability.
72 Hours later - no server, another call reveled that they were waiting on a part for my server and it should be ready within the week.
Finally exactly 1 week after ordering the server, it came online and has been fantastic, 1and1 were a great help setting it up, (they ship with the php engine turned off so be sure to change this if you are using a CMS) and I am glad I have finally made the switch.
A little more dialogue from 1and1 would have been appreciated and I think that the 24hrs stated in their upgrade process is misleading, but on the whole I found the staff to be helpful and sympathetic to my requests.
Another point to note if upgrading from 1and1 shared to a 1and1 dedicated server is that they will automatically transfer your webspace files across to your new server, one thing they can't do though is transfer your MySql databases as these are hosed on a separate server. You therefore need to dump and reinstall these on your new server.
